The Moai, located on Easter Island, Chile, are very famous giant stone statues. It is still not known exactly when and why they were built, but it is thought that they were probably objects of worship. Recent research has revealed that the moai actually had more than just a religious effect. The rocks used to create the moai statues contain phosphorus and calcium. Research suggests that this phosphorus and calcium functioned as fertilizers to help crops grow. The people of Easter Island may have worshipped the moai statues as gods, since crops grew well near them.
